Westminster Choir College Voice faculty member Mark Moliterno received the Duke Voice Care Center鈥檚 2019 Patrick D. Kenan Award for Vocal Health and Wellness during the Center鈥檚 annual World Voice Day celebration.
Established in 2010, the Patrick D. Kenan Award for Vocal Health and Wellness is presented annually to individuals whose lives and careers increase awareness of the importance of the human voice. The award pays tribute to the legacy of a dynamic and ambitious Duke physician and performer, Patrick D. Kenan.
Mark Moliterno, who presented a YogaVoice庐 workshop as part of the celebration, is the tenth recipient of the Patrick D. Kenan Award. Previous award honorees have been American Idol winner and country music sensation Scotty McCreery, Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon, international opera star bass-baritone Simon Estes, Broadway performer Lauren Kennedy, Soul Ingredients庐 founder Dr. Trineice Robinson-Martin, National Public Radio broadcaster Carl Kasell, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Tift Merritt, the Triangle-based band Delta Rae and Durham鈥檚 all-male chorus 100 Men In Black.
Moliterno is an accomplished opera singer, voice teacher, yoga teacher, IAYT-certified Yoga therapist, workshop leader and author. He is known as a specialist in helping people understand and uncover their authentic voices. His extensive performing career has taken him to many countries in a variety of leading operatic roles and as a concert soloist and recitalist. He is the founder of YogaVoice庐, a unique pedagogical program that combines several traditions of Yoga philosophy and practice with bel canto voice techniques to develop authenticity and wellness in the art of singing and personal communication. He presents YOGAVOICE庐 workshops at professional conferences and gatherings internationally. He has published articles in Yoga Living Magazine and The Journal of Singing. He is co-author with Professors James Jordan and Nova Thomas of The Musician鈥檚 Breath, and he is the featured instructor on The Musician鈥檚 Breath Yoga DVD. His work, especially related to overcoming performance anxiety, was featured in an article in the May 2014 Yoga Journal magazine, titled, 鈥淗ow to be Fearless.鈥
