The 小优视频 Art Gallery will present 鈥淭ranslating Nature: Recent Works by Joy Kreves鈥 Thursday, September 30 through Saturday, October 30. An opening reception is planned for Thursday, September 30 from 5 to 7 p.m., and the artist will present a talk about the exhibit on Thursday, October 7 at 7 p.m.
The exhibit features two and three-dimensional mixed-media work by Kreves, whose artistic influences range from Meret Oppenheim, Robert Rauschenberg and Wassily Kandinsky to contemporary architecture and traditional Chinese lattice designs. Some works integrate original handwritten poems by the artist, whose blog 鈥淟ittle Bang Theories鈥 focuses on her life as an artist.
鈥淚 recognize more and more how precious our natural environment is, and how it colors and shapes our life,鈥 says Kreves, reflecting on the exhibit鈥檚 title. 鈥淗ow people see and what they see is colored and clouded by their memories and their internal narrative. I am trying to translate my experiences of nature into a layered and materially inclusive language. I hope that my translation meets the viewer in an integrated way so as to awaken in them the gratitude that I feel for these rich connections to nature.鈥
